Apples of Gold
The sage bridles his mouth before the mind dangles the tongue.
Intense emotions, overwhelming feelings cause a man to speak the unthinkable, or think the unspeakable.
God's awareness of a man's mouth precedes time, He counsels apples of gold:
- Words aptly spoken are like apples of gold in settings of silver. (Proverbs 25:11)
- Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. (Proverbs 12:18)
- A gentle word turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. (Proverbs 15:1)
- A prudent man keeps his knowledge to himself, but the heart of fools blurts out knowledge. (Proverbs 12:23)
- A man's knowledge will be heard after he first learns to keep it silent. ~ anonymous
- As a dream comes when there are many cares, so the speech of a fool when there are many words. (Ecclesiastes 5:3)
- Where words are many sin is not far away, he who holds the tongue is wise. (Proverbs 10:19)
- Even a fool will appear wise when he keeps his mouth closed. ~ anonymous
An end to this matter:
The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails – given by one shepherd. Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them. (Ecclesiastes 12:11-12a)
