Baffled by God

Upon an earth in open rebellion,
From a heart that still leans sin's way
With a back turned against Heaven
And a face still set to Babylon
The good Father counted my worth far greater than the death of His one Son
I ponder inside and can see no reason
Salvation is so much more than I can understand.

I cannot explore the soulful depths that would create such an exchange
A love I wonder at, yet do not own has seized me - this I know
I cannot explore my Father's mind, nor grasp His fight for me
What a righteousness that has laid hold of me
Beyond all sense of man
Such mystery so unfathomable, it is too deep for me.


Surely Charles Wesley in 1738 was also consumed by a baffling unworthiness when he published:
 
 
Salvation is a measure that no man can reckon, could that be why it is treated so lightly?
 

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)
