Why God Is With Me

Is Psalm 23 the most famous Bible passage in history?

How many times has it been quoted, brought comfort or been meditated upon?

How often has the Bible had its jacket dusted again while it is flipped open to Psalm 23?

King David in Psalm 23 speaks of three places we all live in at various times, here God remains present:

  • God is with me in green pastures where rest and food is bountiful.
  • God is with me in brown pastures, those fields where my enemy is present.
  • God is with me in the valleys when the pall of sorrow hangs, or shadow of death lingers and threatens.

I am protected, untouchable and NOT vulnerable, despite whatever the external evidence suggests.

God's presence is the guarantor of my safety. He keeps me vertical with His staff, by His rod He snatches me from harm's ways. In danger there continues comfort.

A bold confidence arises, a persistent bubbling within my soul - of receiving good now and then forever, because God has already decided to favor me.

"God will not leave me alone on earth because He does not want to be alone from me in heaven."

PSALM 23

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
He leads me beside quiet waters,
He refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
    for His name’s sake.
Even though I walk
    through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
    for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
    in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.
Surely your goodness and love will follow me
    all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
    for ever.

If I had not known my pain I would not have known His presence.
