Rewriting My Prayer
9 August, 2018
No form of selfishness is so deeply and dangerously sinful as that which glories in being a man of prayer.
To seek God first for the desires of the flesh ahead of heaven's manna is to risk God sending leanness to our souls in answer.
Impoverished prayer waters no soul, ushers no benefit.
And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (Matthew 6:5-6)
When self all bold and shameless follows me to the altar and kneels beside me in prayer - it has destroyed my prayer before it is ever uttered.
'Self' is the deceiving, devouring serpent still whispering in the garden of prayer.
It is in this blind seduction of sin that a clueless heart seeks its glory through prayer.
