The Competition for My Soul

That which controls a man owns him.

A man's appetites are his rudder. His desires steer and then trap him. (See Proverbs 11:6)

I have been mastered far too long, by far too many false lords - all are vocal passions hovering in the competition for my soul.

Pleasure and Self-Interest are always the banner flying above any new lord tugging upon my soul's strings.

To be frank - I now reflect that all enticements and promises I have subscribed to are proved grossly hollow and deceitful. They have delivered bucket-loads of pain with no promised satisfaction at all.

But I am far from being alone.

We have all learned to exchange manna for mammon.

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. (Matthew 6:24)

The carnal heart's two desires are only to ever multiply its treasures and lose its bruisings.

A man's desires consume his heart - while the Lord still knocks gently and persistently upon the door of the soul.

Permit not the Lord to be robbed from your heart anymore than He would choose to be robbed of you.

There is no second master. He who comes second is no lord at all.

O' Lord please trouble my soul this day and every day until it finds its Master in You alone. Amen.

A single moment with the Lord pales every earthly paradise into insignificance.
