The God of the Lonely Night
Why does night multiply loneliness? Why is night the season of a dark self-examination? Surely too it is the time where troubled souls learn where others weep? This is Gethsemane.
Eyes full, backs bent and hearts torn by brokenness are the positions of those sobbing too in their true Gethsemane.
Heaven remains disturbingly silent to the appeals from earth. A stone's throw has now become a distance incapably far from friends.
As with their Lord - friends have abandoned them, religion has condemned them, and the darkness of this hour only betrays the deeper penalty of a dawn too close.
Through the travails of this lonely night that yeast of faithfulness is caused to rise. It begins its work of steadfast courage. Every moment lived thus far, every previous deposit of heaven and resource of hope is summoned -- for tonight is prayer but tomorrow is passion.
The god of the lonely night is the faithfulness of the soul, for it was well-formed in many similar yesterdays - it walks under all those visiting Gethsemane and carries them through tomorrow, ready for Sunday.
The god of the lonely night will take you from your Gethsemane to your Calvary, but the God of Endless Days will then raise you forever.
There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever. (Revelation 22:5)
