The Making of the Soul

What craziness has caught us, what malaise has fallen upon us, that our individual prayer as much as our praying together could fall for such a bold deception:

that our words are more important than our silence? Silence has become a fearful thing ... silence is like a gaping abyss which may just swallow us. (Henri Nouwen, with a SoulSupply edit)

Consider, would you, these four helps to each soul:

  • The silence of solitude is the recovery room for those weakened.
  • The silence of solitude is the GPS for those seeking.
  • The silence of solitude is therapy for those needing.
  • The silence of solitude strips the soul's scaffolding.

The Lord, who is the good shepherd, leads to green pastures and silent waters. Here He restores the soul in His quiet and loving presence.

(Don't forget - the final assize still guarantees every spoken word will be held to account.)

Silence is an instruction of God across, and to, His creation.

The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him. (Habakkuk 2:20)

The challenge becomes to fill the preoccupied fear of silence simply with the thoughts of faith.

The fear of sitting in silence should never defeat the faith that yearns to sit in silence, for in this is the making of the soul.
