The Pocket of Leisure

Soul Snack 61/14 ... A very fleeting pocket of leisure has arrived, it is called retirement. The western world gears with all its energy to this goal. Accumulation is the secret.

Hardships, privations, betrayals and lies were endured.

Relationships were sacrificed and God remained lost.

Pressure, ill-health and selfish ambition stole any sense of life harmony.

Uncontrollable market fluctuations, and the vagaries of real estate or the stock exchange robbed many a midnight slumber.

This life-strangling personal expense was for a brief fling at leisure and a grasp at a season for the worn-out, code-named retirement.

This season is spent in a different occupation at doctor's waiting rooms, pharmacies and a raft of therapists. The practitioners (all younger) are sought to put right the aches and pains, gained through the efforts of striving to retirement.

Retirement has lied, it is not the place of rest - merely the short season where activity has re-focussed and slowed.

We scour the earth and sell our souls for this brief indulgent rest, yet neglect to build into rest forever.

We pursue temporary rest at peril of losing eternal rest.

Choose the ambition of righteousness, for the fruit of such longing is peace.

The fruit of righteousness will be peace; its effect will be quietness and confidence for ever. (Isaiah 32:17)

It is in the seeking of righteousness and not retirement that true rest is found. This is not a pocket of leisure, but an earthly and permanent pleasure.
