The Shape of True Love
Three centuries ago the firebrand pulpiteer Jonathon Edwards melted pride and chastened souls with his timeless sermon - Sinners in the Hands of an angry God.
But there is so much more to the God of the sinner than just anger.
To my simple mind, a perfectly cut diamond may accurately reflect God. There are many pure facets to Him.
For too long Christians have been padlocked to an ecclesiastical grief-stricken fence of personal performance or guilt laden duty.
In ignorance we neglect to spin the diamond, to gaze upon God's faces of mercy, compassion, grace, goodwill and love.
The shining God of Calvary deals with His own anger, and holds no resentments for:
- the me that still sins, He still forgives,
- the me that I don't like, He still delights in and
- the me that is ill-informed, He still teaches.
But surely, Calvary first shows Sinners in the Hands of an anguished God? Nailed in unspeakable pain the shape of true love is revealed. It is not a heart or even a diamond.
