The Weakness of Adam

Humans are beggars in various clothes.

The most tawdry of all clothing is acquiescence. It bemoans courage, covers sin and flees truth.

A jaded or accurate Mark Twain (maybe both) summarily dismissed humankind on countless occasions - one such dismissal was:

The human race is a race of cowards; and I am not only marching in that procession but carrying a banner.

Humans have little real strength as they scratch for the crumbs of life, or pluck at the fruits of success.

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. (Genesis 3:6)

Adam at first wore no tawdry clothes, until he watched his wife's temptation without protest and joined in.

It was from his treasonous weakness that Adam in perfect silence exchanged a feast for a famine, and divine friendship for enmity.

Adam cowardly watered disobedience into life.

Adam's strength in Eden was around him, it was not within him. I guess Adam did not know this.

Adam's strength came because he first stood in purity and walked with God.

It is only as we first see our real weaknesses within that we will ever be able to stand in true strength from without.
