The Whisper of a Fine Witness

After the wind there came an earthquake, after the earthquake there came a fire, and after the fire there came a gentle whisper. (See 1 Kings 19:11-12). The Lord was in the whisper.

The Lord does not (yet) announce Himself with trumpets and thunder. The heavens still proclaim Him to any who would lift their eyes.

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. (Psalm 19:1)

The Lord's humble habit continues to announce Himself quietly to this world, very often quietly to the pained and soft heart.

From an unseen and even unheard diligence you too can be God's whisper of witness. This you may not even know.

He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth. (Isaiah 35:7)

  1. The most convincing testimony about God's existence is often found in suffering people, who do not complain about their destiny, but who trust in God and in the midst of their pain, worship and honor God with gratitude. ~ Peter Barnes
  2. God has allowed hard things in your life so you can show the world that your God is great and that knowing Him brings peace and joy, even when life is hard. ~ Francis Chan

Paradoxically it is through this strange quietness that human lives can whisper 'witness' loudest.

The Lord is still in the whisper.

Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life... so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders. (1 Thessalonians 4:11-12a)
