When is Evil Safe?
A Halloween game turns frightfully sour...
Three sets of anxious and transfixed teenage eyes gaze past mom's and dad's stunned faces to an upturned glass that glides across the dinner table.
An arresting silence binds this Christian family in its spell. Rigid bodies mirror the terror of their eyes. A happy well-intentioned playful past-time suddenly descends to horror.
(Wise patriarchal spiritual guidance was so sadly and noticeably absent around this family table.)
Their sense of dis-ease is strong, nearly overpowering. Bowels flutter and tears well. Still not a sound is heard. Silence captures their tongues, while discomfort and fear imprison their bodies.
None of the five senses could support an explanation, but their sixth sense shook. Each now knew evil's presence.
The happiness of Halloween engaged by this 'innocent' family with the 'innocence' of spells, five sided stars (pentagrams) and Ouija boards threatened their entire being. There was no harmlessness in this activity - only foolish and disobedient naivety at best.
... or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD ... You must be blameless before the LORD your God. (Deuteronomy 18:11-13)
There are no safe dalliances with evil, although evil would deceive us all to believe otherwise.
