Soul Snack 186/11 ... Spiritual Icebergs

Icebergs are well-known for their invisible size. Probably the most famous iceberg in history was the cause of the Titanic's unexpected tragedy. This iceberg was approximately fifty feet high with 7/8ths of it reaching unseen below the waterline. With a weight of 500,000 tons this medium-sized iceberg was really a small island. The 46,000 ton Titanic was never going to be a match for it. The U.S Navy has estimated such a block of ice to be virtually indestructible. They have calculated it would take 2.4 million tons of petrol to generate sufficient heat to melt it.

An axiom of scientific endeavour explains that all icebergs have so much more below the surface than above it. Jesus taught that spiritual depth too is for his followers; what is seen is far less important than what is unseen.

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.  But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. (Matthew 6:5-6)

The strength, the substance and the inviolability of an iceberg is all found in what is kept as a secret. Its immovability is found in what is out of sight. The secret place is really the place of strength.

Next time a titanic crashes into you ensure that your strength is so deep that you injure the titanic, but it can't even move you.

Seek to become a spiritual iceberg - only you and our Lord will ever see how deep you can go and how immovable you can become.
