Soul Snack 159/11 ... The God of the Lonely Night

Knees bent, eyes full and hearts rent asunder are the positions of those in Gethsemane.

Religion has chastened them, friends have abandoned them and the darkness of this hour only betrays the darkness of an imminent tomorrow.

Heaven remains disturbingly silent to the appeals from earth. A stone's throw has become a distance incapably far from friends.

Into the lonely night the yeast of faithfulness acts. Every moment lived thus far, every previous deposit of heaven and source of hope is summoned -- for tonight is prayer but tomorrow is passion.

The god of the lonely night is the faithfulness that was formed yesterday - it walks under all those visiting Gethsemane carrying them through tomorrow, ready for Sunday.

The god of the lonely night will carry you from Gethsemane to Calvary, but the God of Endless Days will then lift you forever.

There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever. (Rev 22:5)
