SOUL SNACK 6/14 ... Shattering the Hourglass

A recalcitrant prophet railed against God around 680BC. The God of heaven fielded Habakkuk's complaints loudly mailed from earth. A patient God explained; My acts and My purposes are entirely deliberate.

"For the revelation waits an appointed time… though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and not delay." (Hab 2:3)

The God of heaven is no ‘last minute merchant'. God plans and seizes time in brackets. These brackets He calls seasons. To us it spells a finiteness that is direct from the Eternal.

God both opens and closes seasons. He acts in ‘appointed times'. God's pre-determinations are guaranteed, and they can't be hastened or delayed by man.

God has also revealed to man a place absent of seasons, without any appointed time. Here the hourglass is shattered and no clocks are hung.

Heaven is the opposite of earth. It is a place where I will NEVER be out of fashion, for there are no seasons. (My daughter will forever be grateful).

No season is ever new. But, it is always accountable. Each season is to be lived correctly. Then the ensuing one is arrived at well, and unhindered.

The ultimate season I must get correct is life on earth.

Martin Luther only had two days on his calendar - "this day and THAT day!"

The sober soul will measure life in seasons but peer past them to ‘that appointed day', knowing full well that day arrives for each soul when the hourglass is shattered.

Live today as if you may meet Jesus tomorrow.

    Soul Snack 5/14 ... SpreadingJOY

Have you ever been humbled by another's New Year resolutions?

I was humbled when I read the following. Normally New Year's resolutions revolve around improvement for the well-being of self, SO enJOY the fresh air of these JOYful resolutions.

From heaven the Lord looks down ... He who forms the hearts of all ... considers everything they do. (Ps 33:13-15)

We all waltz into the New Year thinking of new things to accomplish during the year ~

I resolve to enjoy the success of others

I resolve to encourage those around me to keep pursuing their passion

I resolve to treat others the way I want to be treated, no wait - BETTER than I want to be treated

I resolve to use my strengths without worry that my weaknesses may not hinder

I resolve to be kind to those who are the meanest

    I resolve to hug freely

I resolve to change what I can and find the good in what I can't

I resolve to say thank you to someone daily

I resolve to be a positive force

I resolve to let those in my world know just how important they truly are

    I resolve to love, and

I resolve to celebrate the good, forgive the bad and enjoy the moment.#

    Today's Soul Snippet:

Righteousness will always prevail, evil cannot defeat righteousness.

Soul Snack 4/14 ... Kaizen Christians

I am advised (by those far more learned than I) that the Japanese esteem an axiom named ~ kaizen.

Simply explained to the western mind, this equates to voluntary and continuous self-improvement. Or to change good for better.

At least a century prior to kaizen becoming popularised, the first Anglican Bishop of Liverpool taught this principle to Christians.

Walk more closely with God. Get nearer to Christ. Seek to exchange hope for assurance. Seek to feel the witness of the Spirit more closely and distinctly every year. Lay aside every weight, and the sin that so easily threatens you. Press towards the mark more earnestly. Fight a better fight, and war a better warfare every year you live. Pray more. Read more. Subdue self more. Love the brethren more. Oh that you may endeavor to grow in grace every year, that the end of your Christian course may be better than the beginning! ~ J.C. Ryle

No Christian needs to finish each new year as they have begun it.

    SOUL SNACK 3/14 … Of Pilgrims & Pioneers - B

Pilgrims and pioneers cross unchartered lands, ford raging rivers and defeat wild animals. They have a heart to conquer and a mind to finish. You too can pursue such victories in 014 and:

    • only store up good things in your heart that you may overflow well ~ Mt 12:34-35, Lk 6:45
    • shine in righteousness and lead many to righteousness ~ Dan 10:12
    • learn and live in the contentment of Jesus ~ 1 Tim 6:6
    • desire the Holy Spirit daily to pour over you ~ Eph 5:18
    • be alert to temptation ~ Lk 22:40
    • not sin today ~ Jn 8:11
    • seek His purity and humility ~ Dan 10:12 and
    • desire for Jesus to increase and for you to decrease ~ Jn 3:30.

Your identity as a pioneer may never become a Wikipedia entry, you probably will never have a red carpet rolled out for you, or watch your name illuminated in neon lights - but your name IS in the Book of Life.

The day WILL arrive for a divine welcome party, and then you will hear:

well done my good and faithful servant ... come and share your master's happiness. (Matt 25:23)

This one sentence alone ensures all that you attempt for the Lord 2014 will be wothwhile.

    SOUL SNACK 2/14 … Of Pilgrims & Pioneers - A

New Year continues (and I suspect always will be) the place for pilgrims and pioneers. It invites plans to new places and thoughts of the exotic.

The New Year presents a season to enter untravelled territory, to read unseen signposts. As each New Year arrives the sober examine their previous successes, lament their losses and learn from their failures. Through this self-auditing the pilgrim will travel to fresh countries, and the pioneer will greet new faces.

Would you pioneer the path this year to:

    • be closer to Jesus ~ Jer 30:21
    • know God alone and to remove all distractions to this end ~ Ps 46:10 ·
    • desire for God's will to prosper longer than your will does ~ Is 53:10, Jn 5:19
    • be in a place of growing dependence on Jesus, that you may bear permanent fruit for Him ~ Jn 15:16
    • know and deliver the words of comfort for the weary and burdened ~ Is 50:4
    • be only a speaker of words for grace & mercy, removing all condemnation, criticism and bitterness from your speech ~ Eph 4:29 and
    • know your spiritual enemies (hindrances to growth)?

Pilgrims and pioneers are always honored as adventurers.

Enjoy a different adventure with Jesus this year. Who knows someone may even be watching you and seek to also walk your path?

Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near. (Is 55:6)

Soul Snack 1/14 ... Loaded Lips

To all those who may have began the year with a burden, who celebrated the New Year on the outside but not on the inside, or who found 2013 so wearisome that they are wary of 2014  - a humble plea to the Father who is always love every year ~

My Father in Heaven, thank-you that you have seen my 2013, and all my preceding years. Thank-you that you have loved me beyond my foolishness, and not rejected me for my constant sin. I would pray now for 2014:

    • make peace my governor and righteousness my ruler,
    • keep me please from temptation, and hold no sin against me,
    • walk closer beside me than ever before; surround me, be my rear guard and my vanguard, hover over me that I may dwell in your shadow,
    • may I never again shove you away, bump you off, or turn my back on you, for
    • you are my ONLY rock, my highway to holiness, my shade, my shelter and my guide,
    • may my emotions well, and my heart pound in pursuing you this year,
    • I desire your shelter in all of 2014, and that your praise will be continually loaded upon my lips. ~ AMEN

I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness (Is 61:10a)

    Today's Soul Snippet:

God says ~ "I know how to care for those who belong to Me."

  • A New Year Lesson from the Ancient GreeksTweet This

Soul Snack 248/13 ...Trading on Timanthes for 2014

"A story is told of a young Greek artist named Timanthes who studied under a respected tutor some 2,000 years ago. After several years the teacher’s efforts seemed to have paid off when Timanthes painted an exquisite work of art. Unfortunately, he became so enraptured with the painting that he spent his days gazing at it.

One morning when Timanthes arrived to admire his work, he was shocked to find it blotted out with paint. Angry, Timanthes ran to his teacher, who admitted he had destroyed the painting. “I did it for your own good. That painting was retarding your progress. Start again and see if you can do better,” he told him. Timanthes took his teacher’s advice and produced Sacrifice of Iphigenia, which is regarded as one of the finest paintings of antiquity."#

As the New Year arrives it is easy to reflect upon yesterday's spiritual gains and settle for them.

Spiritual gain is only made when yesterday's spiritual successes are not traded upon tomorrow.

God already has new peaks for you to climb, unexplored caves for you stop within, fresh rain to drench you, stormy water for you to walk upon and unseen mountains for you to move.

We each must put down our past to pick up our future.

Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.  (Is 43:18)
