Lost in Innocence
Pontius Pilate was in a purple pickle. Presented with both lies and the Lord - he could recognize the truth. Yet the weight of public pressure meant Pilate had little interest in innocence, only fear of a wide disturbance.
A weak-hearted Pilate passed an infintely stronger-hearted Jesus over to King Herod. He ignored the innocence of Jesus. Herod would promptly copy.
Even on His return to Pilate Jesus remained innocent.
As with guilt, innocence too can't be removed.
But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. So Pilate decided to grant their demand. He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will. (Luke 23:23-25)
Faced with stomach-churning injustice, Jesus still chose life-giving innocence.
Jesus' innocence cost Him His life because He never lost it.
Jesus refused to release innocence on the altar of a just vengeance.
It is only the wisest of men who chose to lose their life rather than lose their innocence.
Innocence is a mansion to dwell in, the home of the unshakeable pure.
Be as shrewd as serpents but as innocent as doves. (Matthew 10:16)
