A Parable for a Soft Heart
Somewhere around 430 AD Abba John traveled to Syria to consult the great Egyptian monk, Abba Poemen. He was now well advanced in years. Abba John enquired of him about the gaining of a pure heart.
Abba Poemen taught by parable:
The nature of water is soft, that of stone is hard; but if a bottle is hung above a stone, allowing the water to fall drop by drop, it wears away the stone. So it is with the Word of God; it is soft and our heart is hard, but the man who hears the word of God often, opens his heart to the heart of God.
No hardened heart may regularly drink of the Lord's living waters without softening into gentleness, becoming a vessel of grace, and touching love.
Their heart then begins to be shaped as God's towards mankind - a refuge for others.
Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God. (Matthew 5:8) AND,
Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. (Philippians 4:5)
