Suffering's Chalice ~ D ... Reciprocity

Soul Snack 114/14 ... Boomerangs are an iconic hunting weapon of the Australian aborigine, crafted from wood. These are flat and hurled in an arch, spinning as they travel through the air. Boomerangs are so cleverly carved and thrown, that they return to the thrower.

All of us have lived with boomerang burdens, a suffering that just returns and returns.

Jesus said to him, ‘for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. (Luke 26:52)

OR in another's words:

You can expect to become a victim of whatever means you use to get what you want. ~ Richard A. Spears

The chalice of suffering I can fill myself. When it is low I may even return to the barman for top-ups.

I can (unwittingly?) place myself under the Divine principle of reaping and sowing - as I have done to another, so it shall also be done unto me.

  • Do you find anger, resentments and ill-will of others constantly sour many of your relationships...
  • Do you find complaint; fault-finding and gracelessness from others regularly sear your soul...

Why does the wife still scream at her husband, or why does he continue to lose jobs? Maybe he is a boss and is unable to keep staff? Why does he hear his children fight, disrespect him and yell at him too? The simple answer is that he has first sown to the shouting.

There is one Holy Grail of suffering, one reason that can be surely found, for we all reap what we have sown. This is the Biblical principle of reciprocity.

When one theme of suffering continues, it may well be the time to become brutal with self, and in the deepest and most prayerful humility question - have I contributed to this recurring pain?

The humble man will see his ways, repent and lose this suffering; but the proud man can only multiply it as surely as a boomerang returns to its thrower.

Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness. (James 3:18)

The Golden Rule is still golden.
