Sprinting to Honor

In 2012 cyclist Lance Armstrong (the doping cheat) sprinted not to fame, but to shame. His name is forever recorded in history as synonymous with shame.

Two thousand years prior Diotrophes was the church leader who (like Lance Armstrong) loved to be first. The apostle John wrote of this dishonorable elder in 3 John 9-10. His name was first recorded in Biblical history as forever synonymous with shame.

Men will always love to be first. They will spare no attempt to reach this goal. Pride ensures that.

Self-exaltation and ambition pollutes those who claim Christ as easily as those who reject Him.

The Lord teaches:

  • It is not honorable to seek one's own honor (Proverbs 25:27b)
  • Let another praise you, not your own mouth; someone else and not your own lips (Proverbs 27:2)
  • Seek not great things for yourself (Jeremiah 45:5)

It is from the hunt for honor that the valueless nuggets of fool's gold are unearthed.

Those who pursue honor dwell in the waiting room of disgrace.

The feet that chase honor race down the lane to shame.

The shortest, swiftest and smartest way to honor is humility.

My salvation and my honor depend upon my God... (Psalm 62:7a)
