The Thirsting of the Soul

A thirsting soul longs for more.

Those who audit their heart in times of difficulty and not just check their head will see a soul gazing upwards to heaven.

The thirsts of the soul are God's well lit paths to draw each of us to the safe light of His presence.

The cry of a thirsty soul to Heaven:

My Lord, humbly I know little confidence in this flesh, I would now share me completely with Jesus. This world no longer holds anything that I desire or that I would strive for, save the precious knowledge of knowing You and making You known. Amen

The soul sacrificed to the Lord from the bed of nails or the trip through scorching flames, finds that this sacrifice has received a return abundantly more than it gave.

From the presence of the Lord the soul is equipped to choose for virtue; that long hidden knowledge that flees this world. Thus from a soul's thirsts it gains satisfaction, and spiritual momentum begins.

Spiritual momentum once begun is as a snowball rolling down a hillside. It gains size, speed and beauty - such that many will notice it.

It is the continual thirsting for heaven that becomes sound evidence of total dissatisfaction with earth, and the trinkets it has to offer. It asks:

where can I go and meet with God? (Psalm 42:2)

Three soul stirring quotes suggest such a thirst:

  • Ceaseless interior prayer is a continual yearning of the human spirit towards God. (Henry Nouwen)
  • We hold that man is never so near grace as when he feels he has nothing at all. (Charles Spurgeon)
  • Spontaneous praise is the inner dwelling of the Holy Spirit with the human spirit. (See too Psalm 84:2 & 4)

When the thirsts of the soul are brought to the Lord satan owns no footholds on me. It is then that Jesus' shadow falls across the things of man, my attention to Him is stolen no longer. I am protected.

Yes, Lord, walking in the way of Your laws, we wait for You; Your name and renown are the desire of our hearts. (Isaiah 26:9)

Spiritual resilience is forged when the habits of the heart lift the thirsts of the soul to Heaven.
