That Transcendent Wonder!

We worship the visible, but the only true One who is worthy of worship is invisible.

You saw no form of any kind the day the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire. (Deuteronomy 4:15)

Before Me no god was formed, nor will there be one after Me. (Isaiah 42:10c)

Try as mankind may, the desires of his heart arise through his eyes. It is the unwise human that denies his eyes little, let alone nothing. Countless folks since the dawn of time have subscribed to such shattering foolishness.

When Christian faith 'kicks in' men begin to 'see' that the true wisdom for worship and the object of worship is unseen.

Worship from the heart and soul then increases, and is less fed through the eyes.

Jesus said to those who worship in spirit and in truth that they are acceptable to His Father.

To whom can be God be compared, whose likeness does He carry?

It is a stubborn-hearted mankind who refuses to turn his eyes away from his own handiworks of skill. Yet, to this day the Father still teaches:

I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. (Isaiah 46:9)

The works of stonemasons, and wood-carvers are no more gods than their creators are. Such idols topple over, must be carried and are unable to rescue the burdened. It is only the unseen One who has carried us from birth that lifts our burdens.

It is in Jesus the Son of God that the good Father has made His worship available, although within men it has always been desirable.

The dearest idol I have known,

Whatever that idol be,

Help me to tear it from my throne,

And only worship thee. (William Cowper)
