From Pens to Palaces

Soul Snack 142/13 ... From Pens to Palaces

Very few youths have begun life this way.

This shepherd boy had scattered wolves and fought bears. He had slept in sheep pens and even a lion's threat to his flock did not daunt him.

No razor had yet caressed his skin and an innocent freshness remained over his relationships. Humbly he tended his father's flock with this life-endangering diligence.

David's heart was of pure intent. His body was anchored with strength and courage. All this was moulded by a mind given to faithfulness. Such character God would always watch. No man could see within this young shepherd's strong heart but soon he would be raised. Soon David would be tending a far larger and a far more opinionated flock with much hardened enemies.

He was to become Israel's second king.

He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens; from tending the sheep he brought him to be the shepherd of his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance. (Ps 78:70-71)

God still moves men of purity, faithfulness and courage from sheep pens and places them in palaces. These palaces today may be as invisible as their crowns but tomorrow they won't be. Such men are the true rulers of God's kingdom on earth and in heaven.
