The 'advance guard' speaks loudly of eliteness. Only the best, the highly skilled and the brightest are sent ahead.
The vanguard holds unique responsibilities and a commander's special trust. A commander invests immense confidence in those he selects as his vanguard. They are the pioneers, they map the safe way to advance, they understand the enemy.
The advance guard must also be skilled so as to safely return correct intelligence to their commander. The lives of all who follow depend largely on their discernment and correctness.
After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where He was about to go. Lk 10:1
Surprisingly the call to follow Jesus is actually lived well by His disciples when they are ahead of Him.
As His disciple I am His advance guard. I am His pioneer in my town, my workplace and my family.
Just ponder for a moment, Jesus actually wants me ahead of Him ... He wants to follow me!
