3 Assurances & 1 Warning#

The tail end of 1 John in the New Testament is chapter 5 verses 18-21:

  1. We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them. (v18)
  2. We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. (V19)
  3. We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true. And we are in Him who is true – even in His Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. (v20)
  4. Dear children, keep yourselves from idols. (v21)

There are three strong assurances for Christian believers, and a final warning.

Assurance 1: No child of God goes on living in sin, feeling at home in it. This is because God powerfully protects them after giving them new life in Christ. The Son keeps us and delivers us from the evil one.

Assurance 2: Everyone belongs either to God or to the world. We are in the first category. We have had a heavenly birth and are no longer under the control of the 'top-dog', of this world order - the prince of the air.

Assurance 3: Every believer and child of God knows what Jesus Christ, the Son of God, did for us. More importantly, we know Jesus personally and enjoy a personal faith relationship with God through Him. This is a mere tasting, a sample of eternal life.

Final warning: The world is loaded with attractive alternatives to worshiping, and thus living for the Only True God. All God-substitutes are idols. We Christian believers must resolutely turn our back on them, whatever form they take.#
