The Truth about False Worship

Men pour molten gold into molds his own hands have formed. He then bends over and worships that which is lesser than himself as a being above himself.

These gods are no gods at all.

Impotent gods are not even as foolish as those sufficiently deceived to worship them.

Idols are carried by beasts of burden. They cannot propel themselves. The idol products of men's hands are even less capable than the dumb animals.

Idols are without any ability.

They are no more self-existent than they are self-created.

Idols cannot know the end from the beginning, give counsel or distribute prosperity.

There is no God apart from Me, a righteous God and a savior; there is none but Me. (Isaiah 45:21b)

And, it is as if Isaiah was writing for dullards, God repeats only twelve verses later:

I am God, and there is no other; I am God and there is none like Me. (Isaiah 46:8b)

Stubbornly and blindly men worship that which is born in the concealing darkness of ignorance and pride.

Idols worshiped turn the clever to a fool. False worship removes its practitioners far from wisdom.

The splendor of righteousness and true worship lives hidden under a shroud to the deceived, while their heart ever hardens against God.

Worship that is true begins in repentance, grows from humility and lives in the human spirit. For is not right worship, that which is offered in spirit and truth?

True worship, and the only true God cannot be bottled. He is without form.

Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and His worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth. (John 4:23-24)

The dearest idol I have known,

Whatever that idol be,

Help me to tear it from thy throne,

And worship only thee. ~ William Cowper
