The Miracle at Emmaus

The Easter story and post-Easter story are rich with surprising events, fulfilled prophecy and the compelling supernatural.

To note but a few:

  • Midday becomes as dark as midnight, but the sun again shines when the true Son dies.
  • Holy people rise from the dead at Jesus' death.
  • The massive temple curtain is torn in two by unseen hands from top to bottom.
  • Jesus rises from death. He leaves His heavy stone enclosed tomb as easily as He would soon pass through a timber door.
  • The stone that covered the tomb's entrance is rolled away by an angel. This action is not to let Jesus out (He is already gone), but to permit witnesses in. And,
  • an unrecognised risen Jesus walks with two of His sad disciples on the road to Emmaus.

This short story of the Emmaus Road encounter only appears in Luke's Gospel (24:13-35). It is stunning for its simplicity as well as its depth.

Two 'blind' disciples walk with Jesus, and in their dismay chat with this newcomer. They taught 'Jesus' to Jesus, describing Him as a prophet (see v19).

I suspect this seven mile trek from Jerusalem to Emmaus would have passed quickly for Cleopas and his unnamed travelling companion; their attention was given to Jesus, yet they continued to fail in recognizing Him.

At journey's end, now in Emmaus, these two weary disciples dusted themselves down and invited Jesus into their home (and, thus their lives). Finally their eyes became open to Him.

When Jesus sat at table with them, He took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him... (Luke 24:30-31)

Is that still not the true nature of many a believer? They can walk with Him, maybe even talk with Him; but - all Jesus ever wanted was to be invited in.

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. (Revelation 3:20)
