The Music of Emmaus

It was Easter day. As two disciples walked to Emmaus from Jerusalem, their hearts burned within them, for Jesus too shared their journey.

They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” (Luke 24:32)

Jesus' presence sets a man's heart alight. His love is amazingly and affirmingly warm. It sets the soul to sing, and even pens the words.

Could the burning hearts be expressed within as a secret song?

Secret songs hide below the lips and behind the eyes of those refreshed by Jesus!

These songs are too personal to express, too deep to ignore and just too wonderful to lose.

Indelibly imprinted upon the soul they speak of relationship, expressing unending lyrics of joyful peace. They heal the past, water the present and carry the future. "They are the interior yearning of the human spirit towards God." (Henri Nouwen)

Such songs of devotion and heart-felt reflections inspire! They are a gift of God to replace hopelessness with hope.

The burning heart is where disrepair meets repair. (NOTE: The two disciples are recorded as 'downcast' in their conversation with Jesus - Luke 24:17)

These songs are kindled in the heart, glow in the senses and flame warmly across the soul!

These secret songs Jesus surely sang after His resurrection, in the upper room and maybe as He walked the road to Emmaus? Praise is on the lips of the restored.

Life restoring songs Jesus still burns on the heart of the downcast disciple. He still walks beside them.

For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. (2 Corinthians 1:5)
