Exile Gems! ~ B ... IT MAY SEEM MARVELOUS TO YOU#

Have you ever caught yourself in a moment of intense joy:

  • as you contemplate a particular circumstance that you find yourself in?
  • as you meditate on a special blessing? or,
  • as you think upon how marvellous a situation is?

God foreshadowed that His returned exiles would do just that. They would not have believed this would ever be possible when Zechariah spoke these words. He tells us:

“Once again men and women of ripe old age will sit in the streets of Jerusalem, each with cane in hand because of his age. The city streets will be filled with boys and girls playing there.” (Zechariah 8:4-5)

Their lives were anything but this. They lived in heartache, poverty and fear. Was this just a cruel swipe at them? How often do we ourselves long for the marvellous? But, God reminds His people in the very next verse:

“It may seem marvellous to the remnant of this people at this time, but will it seem marvelous to Me?”

Surely God's 'marvelous' is pedestrian to Him, but I suggest to each of us to slow, then stop, then draw in the deepest breath and cast our imagination far beyond - to where gold is valueless and the sun never sets.

We have our moments of yearning, our disbelieving for the wonderful and marvellous. Has this blinded us to the fact that God has sovereign plans, plans to prosper us and not to harm us, plans to give us a future and a hope? Nothing has changed to this day.

Hold on to the future light, even when the days hang dark.

Zechariah tells us, each of us, when blinded to the marvellous, only listen to He who makes it.
