The Common Son

Soul Snack 21/12 ... The Common Son

Can you recognise this story? Do you do this - I do? Are you too in this anecdote?

I ask my father to share His kingdom with me - He selflessly does and I selfishly take it.

I then leave Him, conduct my life as my desires demand and waste all He has given me. I complete my devotion to self and make carnage of my life.

It is then from my mess-ups that I again want to make-up.

Penitently I return home, yet my Father still has much more for me. I find celebration and not criticism, I receive a feast and not just food, and I enjoy welcome and not war.

So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. (Luke 15:20)

The recognition of my foolishness is again the path to my feasting. It is when I celebrate with the Father (not apart from Him) that I can receive His true love of me and indeed find that despite my sin I am and have always been lovable.

Today's Soul Snippet:

The Father's love can no more be contained than water can be compressed.
