Soul Snack 8/121 ... Lucky Levites!

Firmly deposited in any human soul is the desire to receive good from those ahead of them and and to leave good for those who would follow them.

A decade ago I attended a half day course, through the benevolence of a wonderful friend. I felt, and was unusually privileged. The course was sponsored by The Australian Institute of Company Directors. Around fifty eager men and women attended at The Royal Automobile Club, to be nurtured towards 'the creation of wealth in perpetuity'.

This phrase I distinctly remember - it struck me then as it does now. This speaks of securing a great inheritance for all who would proceed me, well into a time when I would no longer even be remembered. Lives not yet born, not even created would still carry my imprints. I desire well for ALL my future generations it says.

"... in perpetuity" , particularly captured my imagination. There is a naive arrogance to this. It simply fails to recognise a Christ who is returning, and blatantly assumes that I actually am able to exercise control an unseen, unknown future.

But to the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance, since the offerings made by fire to the LORD, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, as he promised them ... This is the inheritance Moses had given when he was in the plains of Moab across the Jordan east of Jericho. Joshua 13:14, 32.

In dividing the Promised Land , God has explained to Joshua the inheritance of the twelve tribes. But one tribe, the Levis were to receive no land, but still had the most secure future.

The Levites were promised by God that He was their inheritance, their unseen future. God was to be their perpetuity. That is best because not only does He know the future, but He holds it. After all, receiving Him as my inheritance guarantees me everything, not just an infinitesimal part of it.

The best Inheritance I can receive is God. The best I can leave is God.

Surely life then becomes about 'the creation of health in perpetuity.'
